Katerina grew up in Athens, Greece. She started pole vaulting at the age of 10 and quickly discovered her talent and love for the event. She broke the 11, 12, 13, and 14 year-old age-group records. At age 15, she broke the Under-18 World record jumping 4.37m (4'4) and became the 2005 World Under-18 Champion. In 2007 she earned silver at the 2007 edition of the same championship and in 2008 she won the bronze medal at the Under-20 World Championships. The same year she earned an athletic scholarship at Stanford University and began competing for the Stanford Cardinal. She won the 2012 NCAA Championships and still holds the Stanford University record. During her professional career in track and field Katerina competed in 4 Olympic Games (London, Rio, Tokyo and Paris). She won the Rio Olympic Games with a jump of 4.85m (15'11). Between 2014 and 2024 Katerina won 1 gold and 3 bronze medals in World Championships, 3 gold medals and 3 silver medals in European Championships and 4 Diamond League trophies. She holds the Greek National record with a mark of 4.91m (16'1)
Mitchell grew up in Sterling, Colorado and fell in love with pole vaulting in high school. He competed for McPherson University. Katerina and Mitchell met in Phoenix, Arizona where they both trained at Risen Performance and Mitchell started his coaching career. In 2015, after getting married, Mitchell started coaching Katerina and remains and her coach ever since. Together they have earned all but two of Katerina's medals. Mitchell has coach at the high school and elite level for more than a decade.
